HBWI POLICIES

We kindly ask that you review our adoption process and requirements. By adhering to these guidelines, we can guarantee the well-being and happiness of both our dogs and their new families. 

ADOPTION PROCESS

Thank you for considering adoption. To ensure the best fit for our animals and potential adopters, we require the following steps for adoption:

  1. Application: Prospective adopters must submit an adoption application electronically through our website: www.HBWI.org/adopt.

  2. Approval Process: Upon receiving your application, we conduct an approval process which typically takes 5-7 business days. During this process, we verify home ownership or obtain approval from your landlord to ensure pets are permitted.

  3. Veterinary Relationship: We check for a working relationship with a veterinarian for any current or previous pets, if applicable. This demonstrates your commitment to providing necessary medical care and complying with local regulations. Please authorize your vet to release relevant information to us.

  4. Home Check: A home check is conducted after the adoption is finalized to ensure the animal's adjustment to the new home and to verify that its needs are being met.

Some exceptions are made upon the review and approval of our Board.​

  1. All adults in the household must consent to adoption.

  2. A valid and current home address is necessary.

  3. Prospective adopters must be at least 21 years old.

  4. Residency is limited to our adoption map.

  5. Existing pets must be up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered, annually heartworm tested, and kept on preventatives year-round. We expect previous pets to have had the same medical care standards.

  6. Surrendering or re-homing animals must be noted on your application.

  7. We refrain from placing dogs younger than 6 months old into households where residents are away for 4 or more hours at a time.

  8. We do not adopt unaltered dogs outside of our adoption map.
